Creative Gallery Ideas

I'm not entirely sure what I'd like to do yet. But perhaps some type of slide show, or short video with relateable music in the background. Or some how artistically and philosophically express what copyright is. I'm thinking now some how showing the distinction of the philosophical question of authorship, and the legal facts of copyright. I'm still not sure how I'm going to do this, but I think thats the idea for now.

Draft of essay

http://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AXdOYAdIJ9q5ZGQ0dHdmNmdfM2dyNGo3cWR4&hl=en

I'm having some trouble taking my essay into one direction. I have plently of information, I am now just trying to direct it into my essay. It seems I have more questions to write in my essay than answers which I am not sure if that is ok or not. I'm hoping as I get more familiar with my text it will get easier.

What argument I will use for my paper

It seems pretty clear that I would use the "Remix" argument by Lawrence Lessig. He discusses copyright law, patent law, and how it should be decided and the problems that it encounters. This is exactly what my topic is on, so I will find a lot of information researching Lawrence Lessig, and using Dr. Baldwins slides about Lawrence Lessig. Also it would seem wise to dabble in the "what is an author" argument, to get a more philosophical and questioning stance in my paper. The reason why I want the tone of questioning and uncertainty in my paper is because copyright law in regards to multimedia is uncertain and vague. The combination of the strict legal laws of Lessig, and the philosophical argument of Fucco will compliment my paper nicely.
The themes and arguments of my project are: What is copyright, and how can or should it be monitured in regards to multimedia? Also what makes somthing "yours", and how can that be made into a structure or outline that people follow?

MLA format for citing thoughts.

seven annotated Bibs.

Oppenhiem,Charles."Some Copyright Sites and Bulletin Boards on the Internet." ariadne.ac.uk.Ariadne/Original Authors. 22 Feb 2010.

Oppenhiem discusses sites that inform you of internet sites that discuss and explain copyright in regards to the Internet. What he explains which is ironic is that because copyright laws within the internet are very unofficial, he came up with a way to provide information that was copyright sound. He provides several internet sites that discuss different aspects of copyright law. This will help in my paper because it will be one source with alot of outlets.

Templeton,Brad."10 Big Myths about copyright explained." templetons.com.22 Feb 2010.
Brad Templeton explains 10 Myths about Copyright

Templeton discusses ten myths about copyright. He wrote this article because copyright law, especially in regards to internet are very unofficial and vague that people are coming up with their own versions of laws. Templeton sets out to explain the ten big myths that people assume about copyright. For instance, just because somthing isn't marked as copyright doesn't mean its free to use without any consequences. It is just so internal and behind the scenes that it is still legally binding even if it isn't physically posted. This will help my paper by giving me the offical explanations and also what people think copyright laws are.

Shestokas,David."Copyright Infringement of Internet Articles." law.suite101.com. 8th Feb 2010.

Mullin, Joe."Word, Office 2007 Yanked as Patent Injunction Takes Effect." law.com. 12Jan2010.ALM Media Properties,LLC,Web.20 Jan 2010.

Mullin discusses a specific situation of patent law. He discusses and explains even a program as popular as "Word", still must follow the law. "Word" was delayed in its deadline due to their infringment on patent law. This will help me in my paper because it will give me specific ideas and views of how patent law works in technology.

Samuelson,Pamela."The copyright Grab." Wired.com. Wired Digital Inc. 25 Feb 2010

Samuelson runs a server providing a vast amount of copyright law information from individual questions, to court cases, to general laws.

Hilderbrand, Lucas." YouTube: "Where Cultural Memory and Copyright Converge." jstor.org. 25 Feb 2010

Hilderbrand discusses the common argument of what is considered copyright, and what is considered your own thoughts or ideas, and how can that be measured. Which is my main question of my paper.

Sprigman, Christopher." Reform(aliz)ing Copyright." jstor.org. 25 Feb 2010

Sprigman discusses the need to reform copyright law to include more technology. This source will be the most beneficial to me because it talks directly about the problems of current copyright law, and the ideas and recommendations to reform copyright law.

Thoughts on my topic thus far

I've collected a good amount of information and research regarding my topic, now I think I need to begin thinking specfically about how I am going to construct the project. My thoughts now are what type of formatting to use, do I need to tailor my topic, or narrow it down more? I think, I'm going to stick with copyright laws in regards to the internet and the whole issue with that. I think thats general enough to give me enough information, while specific enough to use alot of detail, along with discussing my personal views.

3 annotated Bibs

Francese, Andie. "Internet Copyright for Plagiarism." eHow.com. Demand Media, Web. 30 Jan 2010. [.]

This article written by Andie Francesa shows the evolution of copyright law from not just books and articles anymore, but now to the entire inter net. Along with this evolution comes problems with copyright. The article shows that clearly with such a large system as the inter net copyright law is quite blurry. The article goes onto show punishment of copyright infringement such as large fines to jail time. This article is written to show that technology and multimedia are growing faster than technology copyright laws.
Hilfer, Kyle-Beth. "Tweet Tweet: Can I Copyright that?." Law.com 19 Jan 2010. ALM Media Properties, LLC, Web. 20 Jan 2010. [.]

This article written by Kyle Hilfer is meant to bring to attention Internet copyright laws, more specifically facebook and "tweet" copyright laws. The article is about Mark Cuban's "tweet" about the officials at a basketball game he was at, this "tweet" was then taken and used on ESPN, and other blogs and internet sites without Cubans consent. The article then brings about the question can this be considered plagiarism? The article continues to question plagiarism in regards to facebook and twitter. The conclusion of the article brings out the blurry lines of copyright laws in regards to technology and multimedia

Brand, Constant. "EU Agrees on New Internet User Rights." Law.Com. 06 Nov 2009. ALM Media Properties, LLC, Web. 17 Feb 2010. [.-

This article explains the laws attempt to reform copyright law to better serve technology and other multimedia systems, such as the internet and all that it includes. The article explains the dilemma of attempting to reform the laws to include the internet within copyright laws. For instance, the internet has so many people in so many places all at once posting, publishing, copying, pasting, it seems impossible to regulate something like that with a law or multiple laws. The article continues by showing polls and statistics regarding a reform in the law.

What is a Multimedia Author?

With the research I have done with my project, and the information I have been reading, I have come to the rough conclusion that when it comes to multimedia there is no such thing as an author. I've come to this conclusion because with the vastness of the internet and other technologies it seems as though there are no rules after one puts something into the world of multimedia. Granted, there are publication in which authors publish articles online and other people generally do not take credit for it, but the point is, they have that option. Now if we look at the term "Multimedia Author", we say it is a person who most likely publishes things online or using some sort of technology. But the term "author" in regards to multimedia doesn't seem to mesh very well.

Personal Topic Brainstorm

The topic that I am interested in within the scope of multimedia is patent and copyright law. My hopes are to go to law school and one day be a lawyer. I feel this topic brings in both my interests and stays within the scope of the class. Also, this topic provides a vast amount of opinions and thoughts as to what really is "yours", and what makes it "yours". This topic is very interesting to me due to the legal yet very abstract side as well. I am hoping to show a preview of still photos where everything is a copy of each other. Maybe with texts saying "who's is it?" Basically, I would show duplicate of objects.

Ecstasy of Influence response

When first reading the title I assumed that this is an article on what is plagiarism and how not to do it. However, upon reading the article I realized or rather began to question if this article is in fact plagiarism! This was more a joke due to the article explaining how every work of art, from television shows, music, books, etc...were taken from older shows, music, and books. Even further back to plays, poems, notes. All that we see today is in a sense plagiarism. Granted, the article is not stating that one can copy and paste a book Hemingway wrote and call it your own. It is simply showing you that without the old, historic works of art, we would have nothing to use today, a big circle always going around. This can help our research in a variety of ways, perhaps to have you realize how to research or how much to research. If what we are researching has basically happened before then we can almost certainly find traces of our topic wherever we look. Another reason would be to show how important it is, to make your topic your own. Yes, everything that we are going to do already came from something, but the personality and thought doesn't have to be the same. Creativity will always be different because people are different, no matter how similar the work.

Hello World

I use the web for the efficiency and the effectiveness of it. I wouldn't say I love the web, because I probably fear it. It seems like a very hard thing to fully grasp, if it is able to be grasped. However, I do like the web because really there are no limits to what you can do. The quickness of it and the virtually easy way to access the web are a few reasons why I like it. Also, it can be used for countless reasons, for school, work, fun, virtually anything you want the web to be, it can. It is somthing you want to live without but yet you wouldn't want to live without.
